Day twelve, July 20, 2011
I gotta say, hotel hopping is not as fun as bar hopping, hence why we all enjoyed being able to stay a few nights in Vegas! Three lovely nights and it's time to hit the state furthest west of the contiguous states. We should have all been dressed in black considering it was a day of mourning. Yes, mourning, because I was leaving my boyfriend after only two full days. Vegas, I can't promise I won't cheat on you but just know you will always be number one in my heart, even though you emptied our pockets.
During our trip to Cali we discussed where our next destination would be. Originally we were suppose to head to LA but then discussed changing our route and heading to San Diego for the afternoon. We debated and voted on what to do. LA was much closer but Matt had his heart set on visiting the San Diego Zoo. Majority rules in favor of LA but the look of disappointment on Bakes' face made us all cave and we were off to San Diego. Even though the tickets to look at a bunch of caged and sometimes smelly animals cost $40 we read the reviews and decided that it would be worth our while to make the trip. We stopped for a quick bite and 6 hours later were pulling up to the largest zoo in the country. We were very pleased to see that along with admission to the zoo, our tickets also included a guided tram ride around the perimeter of 70% of the zoo and one ride on the sky lift. As soon as we walked into the zoo we took advantage of the guided tram ride. We saw a variety of animals including zebra, elephants, lions, bears, giraffes, and even polar bears. We thought it would be a splendid idea to sit up top seeing as it was open and would make for better pictures. Clearly, we were zoo amateurs and the trees got in the way the majority of the time. Duh! That's like fifth grade science, the higher up the tree you go, the more vegetation there is because there is more sun. Oh well, next time we decide to spend an arm and a leg on the zoo we'll know how to get our money's worth. We spent the next few hours walking around exploring the zoo and viewing a variety of different animals. We decided that it would be in all of our best interests to wrap up our trip (even though we had not yet tackled the zoo at it's entirety) because we still had a few hours of driving ahead of us. Also because, I'll admit it, I was cranky. I was on and off the phone with the next hotel we would be checking in at and was losing my cool very quickly. I missed out on so many animals! We did get to seethe polar bears play, though, so that was cool! We grabbed a quick bite and were back in the car in route to Los Angeles. Bakes was wiped out from the previous nights in Vegas and fell into a deep slumber in the car (where it continued the second we walked into our room and lasted until the following morning!)
The rest of us decided that we finally needed a night to relax and organize ourselves. We spent a few hours outside by the pool and hot tub and planned out our next couple of days. Hopefully California will be a good follow up after Vegas. Pshh, who am I kidding! Not much compares to Vegas! We decided to make this one a short one after the novel of Vegas. Peace, love, an happiness, The Nomads!
